Trigeminal Neuralgia is often described as one of the most painful conditions known to medical science. Patients describe it as an electrical shock, stabbing, or shooting pain that occurs in the face, often triggered by simple acts like speaking, eating, or even a light breeze.

As a neurosurgeon specializing in facial pain syndromes, I want to emphasize one thing: you do not have to live in fear of the next "jab." Modern neurosurgery offers highly effective, life-changing solutions.

What Causes the Pain?

The trigeminal nerve is the primary sensory nerve for the face. In most cases, the pain is caused by a blood vessel (usually an artery) pressing on the nerve at the base of the brain. This constant pulsation causes the nerve to misfire, sending intense pain signals to the brain.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Episodes of severe, shooting pain that feels like an electric shock.
  • Spontaneous attacks of pain or attacks triggered by touching the face, chewing, or brushing teeth.
  • Pain localized to one side of the face.
  • Attacks that last from a few seconds to several minutes.
  • Pain in areas supplied by the trigeminal nerve, including the cheek, jaw, teeth, gums, and lips.

"The relief a patient feels after successful treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia is profound. It’s about restoring the basic joys of life—smiling, eating, and living without fear." — Dr. Agnetia Vinoth

Treatment Options: Beyond Medication

While medications like carbamazepine are often the first line of treatment, their effectiveness can decrease over time, and side effects can become difficult to manage. This is where surgical intervention comes in.

Microvascular Decompression (MVD)

This is the most effective long-term treatment. Through a small opening behind the ear, we identify the offending blood vessel and place a tiny "cushion" between it and the nerve. This relieves the pressure and allows the nerve to heal. Most patients experience immediate and permanent relief.

Radiofrequency Rhizotomy

A minimally invasive procedure where a needle is used to deliver heat directly to the trigeminal nerve, disrupting the pain signals. It is an excellent option for patients who may not be candidates for major surgery.

Regain Your Quality of Life

Trigeminal Neuralgia is a devastating condition, but it is treatable. If you are struggling with unexplained facial pain, a consultation with a neurosurgeon is the first step toward a pain-free future.
